About
Everything finished was raw once
We are named after the raw material, not the finished object. That choice runs through how we pick clients, how we work, and what we refuse to do.
The name
Prima materia
Alchemists used the term for the first matter — the formless substance they believed every refined thing had to pass through before it became itself. Not the gold. The stuff before the gold.
It is an unglamorous thing to name a company after. That is rather the point. Founders arrive with raw material: an insight, a market read, a stubbornness that has not yet cost them anything. None of that is a company yet, and pretending otherwise is how good ideas get expensively skipped past their own foundations.
The mark is the same idea drawn: two sets of rings meeting, interfering, producing a pattern neither would make alone.
What we hold to
Five things we will not be talked out of
-
01
Raw is a stage, not a verdict
Unformed does not mean unpromising. Most of what we work on arrives messy, and the mess is usually where the actual opportunity is hiding.
-
02
Brand and product are one decision
Split them across two vendors and you pay for the seam — in rework, in tone that does not match the interface, in a story the product cannot keep.
-
03
We would rather be wrong out loud
If we think the scope is wrong we say so before the invoice, not after. Founders who want to be agreed with are better served elsewhere.
-
04
Motion should be load-bearing
The same test applies to a brand, a page or an animation: delete it. If nothing is lost, it should not have been there.
-
05
The work has to survive us
Systems, not deliverables. If a company needs us in the room for every decision afterwards, we did the job badly.
We are not trying to be the most people in the room. We are trying to be the ones who saw the shape of it first.
The method
Four phases, in order, every time
The sequence does not change because the failure modes do not change. Skipping Discover is how teams build the wrong thing beautifully. Skipping Refine is how they scale something that was never structurally sound.
- 01
Discover
Understand the raw potential — the market, the customer, the constraints nobody wrote down. This is where we find out whether the brief is the real problem.
- 02
Refine
Shape strategy and structure. Decisions get written down and justified here, so nothing downstream is built on a preference someone half-remembers.
- 03
Accelerate
Fuel growth with resources — people, capital, execution. Speed is only safe once the first two phases have made the direction defensible.
- 04
Elevate
Build enduring leadership. The measure is not the launch; it is whether the company still holds together two years later without us.
How the work divides
Body, spirit, soul
Alchemy split every substance into three principles. We use the same division for the work, because it maps cleanly onto what a company actually needs and in what order.
-
Salt the body
Build
The substance itself — the product people actually use, buy from, and log into. Nothing downstream works until this is real.
-
Mercury the spirit
Brand & Grow
The part that travels — how you are recognised, understood, and remembered, and how strangers become customers.
-
Sulphur the soul
Scale & Capital
The energy that compounds — the operating backbone and the investor-ready story that turn a company into an enduring one.
Bring us the raw material
If you have something unformed and a real reason to think it matters, that is the conversation we want.
